Admission Process for Tulane’s ABSN Program

At Tulane, we want to make the admission process for our accelerated BSN program as accessible as possible. As a result, we have created a five-step process and offer the support of our admission counselors to guide you.

There are two additional steps in the admission process if you are an applicant residing outside the U.S., where English is not the primary language, or transferring credits from a foreign accredited institution.

Review each step below so you can start the admission process today.

1. Reach out to the Admission Office

The first step in the admission process is contacting our admission office. Once you submit the inquiry form, you will be contacted by your assigned admission counselor, who will guide you throughout the process.

You and your admission counselor will discuss why you want to become a nurse and determine whether Tulane’s accelerated BSN program suits your needs and goals. They will review your transcripts and help you decide which of our three start dates — January, May, and September — you should apply to.

2. Complete Prerequisite Courses

Your admission counselor identifies which prerequisite courses you must complete before applying. They help you create an academic plan outlining where and when to take each course. A cumulative transfer GPA of 3.0 is required, and a cumulative nursing major prerequisite GPA of 3.0 is required with a grade of C or better in any one nursing major prerequisite course.

To be eligible, prerequisites must have been completed within seven years of applying to the accelerated BSN nursing program. Otherwise, you must retake the prerequisite course from an approved institution.

Conditional Admission

All prerequisite courses must be completed before applying; however, conditional admission may be offered if you meet all admission requirements and have, at most, three core curriculum or nursing prerequisite courses in process. Only one of the remaining courses can be a nursing major prerequisite science course.

3. Complete Video Submission

All applicants must include a video submission in their application package. This video is limited to 2 minutes to respond to the following questions:

  1. What characteristics do you possess that will make you a good candidate for the Tulane Nursing program?
  2. Provide an example of when you demonstrated your leadership qualities.
  3. How will you balance the demands of this 16-month program with the other demands in your life?

This is an opportunity to demonstrate to the admission team who you are and why you want to become a registered nurse. You can reach out to your admission counselor at any point to answer questions and advise you on your video submission.

4. Meet Technical Standards

Technical Standards refer to the essential functions students must independently demonstrate to meet the curriculum’s demands. You can access the Technical Standards via a link on the application. You must review the standards and digitally sign a document, certifying you read and understand them.

5. Review and Submit Your Application

You and your admission counselor will communicate throughout the process, ensuring you complete each requirement. Once all requirements are met, review and submit your application package. Your admission counselor will contact you once an admission decision has been made.

Requirements for Applicants Outside the United States

There are a few additional requirements for applicants outside the United States or those transferring credits from accredited institutions outside the U.S.

Credits from foreign institutions are referred to the World Education Services (WES), where they will be evaluated and translated if necessary.

Additionally, applicants with a degree from an accredited institution outside the U.S., where English is not the primary language, must take an English Language Proficiency test. Applicants must receive a 100+ score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a 130+ score on the Duolingo English Test.
